A Dance Production inspired by the story of Saalumarada Thimmakka and other Indian Female Environmentalist

About
Amidst the global struggle against environmental degradation, many Indian and international environmentalists/NGOs have been working in India.
The Kathak production will intricately weave together the narratives of Salumarada Thimmakka and other influential women who have made significant strides in environmental conservation in India. Through rhythmic footwork, powerful gestural language and significant use of space, the production will vividly portray their relentless struggles, emotional upheaval, fight against social stigma and the profound impact of their work on both the natural world and society at large.
By incorporating elements of Indian classical music, poetry, and local cultural nuances, the production will authentically capture the essence of these women’s stories and their connection to the land they seek to protect. Through collaboration with communities, environmental organizations, and women’s groups, the production will foster a sense of collective responsibility and inspire audiences to take action towards a more sustainable future.
Ultimately, this Kathak production will serve as a powerful platform to honor the legacy of these remarkable women, celebrate their indomitable spirit, and advocate for the urgent need for environmental conservation in India and beyond.
Saalumarada Thimmakka
One of the key characters inspiring the production
Saalumarada Thimmakka’s narrative is a powerful testament to human resilience and the impact of environmental stewardship. Despite facing poverty, rejection, and personal hardship, she found purpose in nurturing trees and transforming her barren surroundings into a green oasis. With her husband’s support, she embarked on a journey of tree planting, teaching society about the importance of trees in sustaining life and combating environmental degradation. Thimmakka’s story inspires hope and reminds us of the transformative power of compassion and determination, urging us to cherish and protect the earth with unwavering commitment
We use this production to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of other female environmentalists but not limited to are likes of Tulsi Gowda, Kindri Devi, Sugutha Kumari, Rahi Bai Popre, Medha Patkar and Dr Vandana Shiv.
